Swim Meet 101

New to the team?  Read below to know what to expect at a swim meet.

Meet Declarations

Prior to each meet swimmers must communicate their attendance through meet declarations.  Coaches use this information to create the meet lineup.  Families can leave a note with event requests but meet entries are ultimately the coach's decision.

Meet Entries

After a lineup is finalized it is shared with the team.  Swimmers may be entered in up to 4 individual events depending on their skill level and team needs.  Relay teams are also shared in advance including listing alternates.  An alternate may be called on if an entered swimmer becomes unable to compete.  Swimmers are expected to stay for the duration of the meet.

Volunteering

It takes a lot of volunteers to run a meet!  Families are required to complete volunteer hours over the course of the season.  The volunteer policy can be found here.  Signups will be posted prior to each meet--subscribe to the signup calendar to stay up to date on opportunities!

What to Bring

Swimmers should arrive in their swimsuit with clothing to stay warm.  Each swimmer will get a team shirt at the start of the season.  Swimmers should bring their own goggles and a swim cap.  We recommend swimmers bring at least two towels.  Families should bring camping chairs for seating.

Food and drinks are sold at the concession stand at dual meets, divisionals, and All Stars.

Order of Operations

Swimmers and volunteers will check in upon arrival to the meet.

Warm-Ups will occur 30-60 minutes before the meet start time.  Most meets will start at 8am on Saturdays.  The meet schedule can be found on the team calendar.

The team will do a cheer just prior to the start of the meet.

In advance of each of their assigned events, swimmers will report to the Clerk of Course to be seated by volunteers and escorted to the pool deck.

Spectators will be able to view the races from designated areas on the pool deck.

The meet concludes with the mens and womens freestyle crescendo relays.  The team will do a final cheer at the end of the meet.

Meet Results

As the meet progresses, results are typically posted on the "Meet Mobile" App. This app is not free.  Final results will be sent to the team after the meet and also shared on the FSSL website. Ribbons for 1st-8th are distributed at practices following the meets.
